Prometheus – Viral Ad Campaign

Although Ridley Scott has been playing down quite how closely connected his new film, Prometheus, is to Alien; Scott gave an interview at the back end of last year, where he discussed the connection between the two films, which seem to hinge on the ‘Space Jockey’, the giant alien pilot whose body the crew of the Nostromo found on the derelict spaceship in Alien. But he was pretty emphatic that was where the connection ended.

It might all be a smokescreen to deflect from some deeper truth about how Prometheus fits into the Alien universe. Truth be told, I’m kind of reluctant to dig too deep into all this: I’d quite like some surprises when I eventually get to see Prometheus, however, I was pretty excited when I clicked on the link to the Prometheus viral. In the clip, over at weylandindustries where you can see Guy Pearce’s Peter Weyland, CEO of Weyland Industries, delivering a TED talk in 2023, and handily getting out of the way a lot of exposition about the myth of Prometheus, which presumably will be referenced in some way in the film.

In an interview somewhere with Scott recently, he talked about how, in the late Seventies, he always imagined the future would be run by big corporations – hence, Weyland-Yutani in Alien (never mentioned by name, but you see their logo everywhere) and the Tyrell Corporation in Blade Runner. Of course, Weyland-Yutani took on a larger and more sinister role as the Alien series developed. So it’s great to see Pearce’s Peter Weyland delivering his lecture.

Zack Snyder

Zachary Edward “Zack” Snyder (born March 1, 1966) is an American actor, film director, screenwriter, and producer, best known for action/science fiction films. Snyder was born in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and was raised in Greenwich, Connecticut. He attended the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California (where his classmates included Michael Bay).

Snyder went on to shoot, as a director and as a cinematographer, television commercials for such clients as the automobile companies Audi, BMW, Subaru and Nissan, among others. Other commercial work has been for clients including Nike, Reebok and Gatorade. He is well known for his use of slow motion in action scenes in his films… a little too much.

Snyder made his feature film debut with the remake ‘Dawn of the Dead’ (2004), his debut and so far, his best film. I was determined to hate this movie as the original is one of my all-time favorite movies, however Snyder made an excellent film that retained enough of the original, and added some excellent new set-pieces. He then scored a massive box office hit with ‘300’ (2007), adapted from writer-artist Frank Miller’s Dark Horse Comic mini-series of the same name. The film managed to convey the look and tone of Millers series so well that he was entrusted with Watchmen.

He also managed to make a relatively faithful big-screen version of the legendary Alan Moore graphic novel Watchmen, a feat many had tried and failed before. The film of ‘Watchmen’ was released on March 6, 2009 and grossed $185 million worldwide.

Then things didn’t go so well, his follow-up project/animation debut ‘Legend of the Guardians: the Owls of Ga’Hoole’, an animated family adventure film, based on the first three books of the series by Kathryn Lasky. Snyder then produced, co-wrote, and directed ‘Sucker Punch’, released on March 25, 2011. The film, based on a script written by Snyder and Steve Shibuya, was about a young woman in a mental hospital who fantasizes of escape with her fellow inmates.

He has announced that he will be directing the upcoming Superman: The Man of Steel film for Warner Bros., which will be a reboot of the franchise. Written and co-produced by Christopher Nolan, it should be a return to form for the stylish Snyder. He will also be writing and producing (but not directing) a sequel to his Dawn of the Dead remake titled Army of the Dead, and will direct a yet-to-be-produced remake of the 1969 film The Illustrated Man. He also wants to direct a segment for an upcoming Heavy Metal 3, and plans to write and direct a sequel to Legend of the Guardians.
