Lyle – Streaming FREE from 4th August

Director/Writer Stewart Thorndike (Tess and Nana) and Producer Alex Scharfman announced today they have decided to offer their Outfest award-winning horror feature Lyle, starring Gaby Hoffmann (“Girls”), to their fans for free starting August 4, 2014. It will be streaming on the film’s website HERE during the duration of the duo’s Kickstarter campaign for their next project Putney, the second of three upcoming female-focused horror films, also launching August 4th.

Lyle debuted to critical praise at the 2014 Outfest Film Festival where Gaby Hoffmann won the Grand Jury Best Actress award for her electrifying performance as Leah, a pregnant lesbian confronted by an unspeakable evil. Stewart Thorndike’s sinister ode to Rosemary’s Baby uses dark humor and razor-sharp camera work taking audiences into a growing nightmare as Leah begins to question the motives of her partner, friends and neighbors as a pregnant lesbian confronted by an unspeakable evil brings out a primal terror that’s difficult to shake.

Trent Reznor:

For the last fourteen months Atticus and I have been hard at work on David Fincher’s “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo”.  We laughed, we cried, we lost our minds and in the process made some of the most beautiful and disturbing music of our careers.  The result is a sprawling three-hour opus that I am happy to announce is available for pre-order right now for as low as $11.99.  The full release will be available in one week – December 9th.

War of the Worlds

The War of the Worlds was an episode of the American radio drama anthology series ‘Mercury Theatre on Air’. It was performed as a Halloween episode of the series on October 30, 1938, and aired over the Columbia Broadcasting System radio network. Directed and narrated by actor and future filmmaker Orson Welles, the episode was an adaptation of H.G. Wells’s novel of the same name.

The first two thirds of the 60-minute broadcast were presented as a series of simulated “news bulletins”, which suggested to many listeners that an actual alien invasion by Martians was currently in progress. Compounding the issue was the fact that the Mercury Theatre on the Air was a “sustaining show” (it ran without commercial breaks), adding to the program’s realism. Although there were sensationalist accounts in the press about a supposed panic in response to the broadcast, the precise extent of listener response has been debated.

In the days following the adaptation, however, there was widespread outrage and panic by certain listeners who believed the events described in the program were real. The program’s news-bulletin format was decried as cruelly deceptive by some newspapers and public figures, leading to an outcry against the perpetrators of the broadcast. The episode secured Welles’s fame.

An mp3 version of the broadcast can be downloaded free from the Mercury Theatre on the Air website. Check it out here They also have excellent mp3 versions of Dracula, Rebecca and the 39 Steps for download.

The Thing – Graphic Novel

In time for the latest big-screen incarnation of “The Thing,” which hits theaters Oct. 14, Dark Horse Comics is releasing a digital comic set in the same universe — “The Thing: The Northman Nightmare.” The first installment of the 29-page book, written by Steve Niles with artwork by Patrick Reynolds, goes live Wednesday on Dark Horse’s  website.

Niles, best known for his comics ’30 Days of Night’ and ‘Criminal Macabre’ (and more recently for his vampire expertise on the Vampires Vs. Zombies “Deadliest Warrior” finale), has his hands full these days. His latest comic, ‘Criminal Macabre: No Peace for Dead Men’,  just hit shelves. He’s writing “30 Days” again after a nine-year hiatus. And his comic ‘Remains’ is making its small-screen debut as a Chiller network TV movie this fall. But Niles said when he was offered the chance to write “The Thing,” he couldn’t turn it down. Hero Complex writer Noelene Clark caught up with Niles about “The Thing,” John Carpenter and horror in comics.

Check out the first eight pages of “The Thing” comic in the gallery on the Hero Complex website here

Friday the 13th – Jason Body Count Infographic

Exceptional infographic of Jason Voorhees kills from the original ‘Friday the 13th’ through to ‘Jason X’. This image came out in 2009, around the time of the remake, so it doesn’t take the kills from the new movie into account. Plus, the way that film played out, it always seemed like that movie was more of a reboot than a sequel… although it fits easily into the ‘Friday’ canon post ‘Friday 5’ as they are universally awful… fun, but awful.
