Tales of Halloween

Tales-of-Halloween-posterAnthology Horror is doing well at the moment, the V/H/S and ABC’s of Death both doing solid business, now we have Tales of Halloween which will consist of ten segments from eleven directors. Tales of Halloween will bring together directors like Neil Marshall (The Descent) and Darren Bousman (Saws II-IV) in celebration of that most macabre of holidays.

In addition to Marshall and Bousman, there’s Joe Begos (Almost Human), Axelle Carolyn (Soulmate), Adam Gierasch (Night of the Demons), Andrew Kasch (Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy) and John Skipp (Stay at Home Dad), Mike Mendez (Big Ass Spider!), Dave Parker (The Hills Run Red), Ryan Schifrin (Abominable), and Paul Solet (Grace).

All of the interconnected segments will take place during Halloween night in one quiet American town. Well, one typically-quiet American town. On this particular evening it’s being terrorized by all manner of horrifying creatures, from ghouls and aliens to good-old-fashioned murderers.

Carolyn was the one to come up with the project, and will serve as producer alongside Mendez. Many of the filmmakers come from the same Los Angeles scene and are such good friends they even have a cute name for themselves, The October Society.

“It’s so great to be working with such a unique and talented group of directors,” said Marshall. “Many of The October Society have been friends for years, so when Axelle had the idea of combining our talents for an anthology based on our mutual love of Halloween and all things scary, it was a no-brainer.”

Pre-production on Tales of Halloween is already underway, and shooting is expected to begin in November. There’s no release date for this one yet, but it seems a safe bet that we can expect it out in time for the holiday next year… cool poster.

Doctor Strange – Benedict Cumberbatch

Doctor-Strange_Marvel_Benedict-CumberbatchMarvel has finally found its Doctor Strange. It look very likely that Benedict Cumberbatch is the studio’s choice for the superhero flick, and if true it appears to be perfect casting. The news comes after talks with Joaquin Phoenix around the time of Comic-Con went south, and Marvel went back to the drawing board. With names like Jared Leto and Tom Hardy also in the mix, this is obviously a coveted role. Great news for Marvel and fans alike.

Scott Derrickson is directing Doctor Strange and Jon Spaihts is writing the script for the movie (the first draft was penned by Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer). Doctor Strange was hatched by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko during that Marvel Comics heyday of the early 1960’s. He’s a neurosurgeon who becomes Sorcerer Supreme, protecting Earth against magical and mystical threats with powers of sorcery, mysticism, and martial arts. Marvel’s Kevin Feige is producing.

On Set With John Carpenter

“On The Set With John Carpenter” –  John Carpenter’s producing partner Debra Hill hired photographer Kim Gottlieb-Walker to be the unit photographer on Halloween, and Kim soon became part of Carpenter’s filmmaking family, going on to shoot stills on the sets of some of his most iconic films: Halloween, The Fog, Escape from New York, Halloween II and Christine.

Collected together here for the first time is the best of that on-set photography, with iconic, rare, and previously unseen images. All accompanied by exclusive commentary from those involved, including John Carpenter himself, and other key crew and cast.

From production stills, to candids of the stars between takes, and the crew in action, alongside portrait shots of the actors who would eagerly pose for Kim, this book gives an unprecedented glimpse into the action on set with John Carpenter. Get hit HERE

Nightcrawler – Red Band Trailer

Open Road has released a new red band trailer for the Dan Gilroy-directed thriller Nightcrawler. It stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a driven, soulless wannabe who gets a fast car, a cheap camera and a police scanner and chases traffic accidents, murders and other violent incidents in hopes of getting film he can sell to a cellar-dwelling Los Angeles TV news producer. The pace is manic as the anti-hero proves there are no moral bounds to his ambition.

Halloween Themed Ikea Commercial

Late night shopping shouldn’t be like this… Out of Singapore comes a commercial for IKEA that echoes the size of the stores, while also delivering some scares. The ad is an absolutely brilliant homage to Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of Stephen King’s The Shining, as little Danny Torrance bikes through the store, as if it were the Overlook Hotel, and eventually runs into the infamous “twins”.

Why Do We Have A Hard-On For Horror?

Horror movies are a perennially popular genre in film… but why? What makes a movie scary, and what makes scary movies appeal to us? Where did we come from, and where are we going? What’s the future of fear? Why do we willingly sit in a dark room for two hours to deliberately get our pants scared off? Why do we take dates to horror movies?

Out of Print – FREE Documentary

Julia Marchese has spent the past couple years producing and directing Out of Print, a documentary on the allure of 35mm film projection, with the New Beverly at the center of the doc. Financed in part via Kickstarter, the film features interviews with Patton Oswalt, Edgar Wright, Rian Johnson, Joe Carnahan, Kevin Smith, Seth Green, Joe Dante, Mark Romanek, John Landis, Fred Dekker, Lloyd Kaufman, and Richard Kelly.

Now, she has released the film online for free. The title Out of Print has proven to be unfortunately prophetic, for reasons Marchese explains in her online release and on her webpage HERE, but you can enjoy the feature in full right now.

Wolves – Trailer

It’s a difficult thing making a werewolf movie… more often than not they’re terrible. A few years ago I attempted to make a list of the Top 10 good werewolf movies and couldn’t find 10… Since I wrote the list there’s hardly been any worth mentioning. Wolves looks like 80’s fun… but no more.
