Bernie Wrightson Retires

wrightson_frankenstainI just saw this update from the Bernie Wrightson facebook page and am truly saddened to share the news posted by Bernie’s wife Liz. Bernie is one of my all time favourite artists, I am lucky enough to own 2 signed prints of his, of Frankenstein (pictured above) and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. A true gentleman and towering talent of the comic book industry.

Dear Fans and Friends,

I apologize for our silence for the past few months. Last November Bernie began falling again, and having obvious problems with perception. He had to undergo yet another brain surgery to relieve bleeding, and then spend several weeks undergoing in-patient rehabilitation. Unfortunately, it appears that he has lasting damage: he has extremely limited function on his left side, and is unable to walk or reliably use his left hand, among other limitations.

We have had to come to the sad conclusion that he is now effectively retired: he will produce no new art, and he is unable to attend conventions. Should this situation change I will happily announce it here.

He can still sign his name (in fact he was signing Kickstarter prints in the hospital!), and is otherwise pretty healthy and has good cognition. We expect to continue releasing signed prints, and offering occasional pieces of art for sale from the collection that remains. We both thank all of you for your continuing support and good wishes!

All our best,
Liz and Bernie Wrightson

DudeDesigns_FCB_WEBMore insanity from the makers of Dear God No! Check them out on kickstarter HERE and read the official blurb below…

FRANKENSTEIN CREATED BIKERS centers around the re-animation of the South’s most notorious biker gang, The Impalers. Dr. Marco and his assistant are performing gruesome experiments in their asylum lab and have resurrected the thrill-kill Motorcycle Club to capture a Bigfoot containing a pathogen that will allow them to perform a human head transplant. When news of the gang resurrection draws the attention of bounty hunters, law enforcement and rival gangs, the lofty aspirations of these mad scientist starts to spiral out of control. Things get even worse for the occupants when failed experiments escape from the basement and the lab is attacked by a bomb-happy femme fatale named Val.

Six

5b1a505c53d45748d3052a4de07452e7_largeSIX is a 64 page horror comic anthology. It collects six tales of terror written by Fabian Rangel Jr with art by various artists. The comic has already 100% funded in the first week. However you can still get involved as they have extended and added to the brief.

If they raise 3,500, the book will increase in page count to include script pages and characters designs! So you’ll be getting a thicker book, more in line with a trade paperback than a one-shot single issue.  If the total reaches 5,000 EVERYONE will be getting a free print from “Blood and Snow” artist Jonathan Sawyer!

Harbinger Down

With Harbinger Down, Alec Gillis pays homage to the monster movies of the late 70s and early 80s, specifically Ridley Scott’s Alien and John Carpenter’s The Thing, which both elevated rubber monsters to a new level of realism and visceral impact.

The most highly funded horror movie in Kickstarter’s history, Harbinger Down is a high-intensity “all practical effects” sci-fi creature feature that’s not just a movie, but a mission: to celebrate the art of ‘real monsters’ and share that love with a new generation and as an alternative to big studio CG driven films.

Hound – Kickstarter

Hound_bannerToday this great legend is barely known outside Ireland, but THIS WASN’T ALWAYS THE CASE. In the eighteenth century the legend was translated into English and immediately spread the length and breadth of Europe, becoming a “bestseller” from Moscow to Madrid.

With Paul Bolger and Barry Devlin’s vivid reimagining and Paul Bolger’s stark and powerful visual style WE WANT TO RE-INTRODUCE this epic of Celtic Ireland to Europe… and introduce it for the first time to the wider world.

Teen High Zombie Squad

Teen High Zombie Squad is a 120 page graphic novel about a group of misfits thrust together in the midst of a high school invasion.

After a seemingly routine lunch break detention, four teenage misfits find their school has been deserted and nothing is as it seems. They’re soon confronted by hordes of their mutated classmates and monstrous faculty members hungry for blood. It’s up to four unlikely heroes from completely different worlds to save their high school and home town from a full scale invasion.

Teen high is inspired by a heavy diet of 80’s and early 90’s films like  The Breakfast Club, John Carpenter’s The Thing, The Goonies and Aliens. Its dark humor, mixed with horror and a splash of science fiction. It’s a character driven story that focus’ on themes of identity and friendship with a strong emphasis on the relationships that evolve between the story’s heroes.
