Life On Mars creators Ashley Pharoah and Matthew Graham are writing the six-episode period drama The Living And The Dead. Co-produced by BBC America and BBC Wales Drama Production, the story follows Nathan Appleby, a reluctant gentleman farmer in 1888 England who is obsessed with proving the existence of the afterlife. He looks into hauntings, paranormal happenings, and ghostly visitations, encouraged by the Society for Psychical Research. But as his investigations become more frequent and scary, Nathan starts to see and hear disturbing things that he simply cannot have imagined. Casting is to be announced. “We are as excited about this show as anything since Life On Mars and Ashes To Ashes,” said Pharoah and Graham, who also are exec producing for Monastic Productions. “We want it to be moving, tender, sensual — and very, very scary.” BBC Worldwide will distribute The Living And The Dead worldwide.

Last years hit movie, the Guillermo del Toro produced Mama was okay, let down some poor CGI for the Mama character. Everyone who knows me knows that I hate CGI in horror, apart form the odd ‘touch-up’ I don’t like it for characters or monsters, I still love good make-up. This test for Mama was undertaken before the shoot and features Javier Botet as the lady ghost Mama and it is delightfully spooky, especially in black and white. Botet (Medeiros in the REC series) whose especially thin physique is a result of Marfan syndrome, really knows how to manouvre his body to create something otherworldly and menacing.

Martin Scorsese recently listed his 11 favorite scary movies, name-checking some less famous titles along with the usual classics. Scorsese penned his list of scary movies for The Daily Beast, which also has clips of each title listed below.
- The Haunting
- The Isle of the Dead
- The Uninvited
- The Entity
- Dead of Night
- The Changeling
- The Shining
- The Exorcist
- Night of the Demon
- The Innocents
His tastes strongly tilt toward classic horror. The Shining, The Exorcist, and Psycho are perennials on these kind of lists, but some of the older movies may be less familiar to modern audiences. The Entity is the newest film on there, and it’s over 30 years old.
